Gold Star Publishing

Introduction Gold Star were not the first publisher Guy wrote adult material for, but he surely wrote more for them than for anyone else. Perhaps this is partly because he struck up a friendship with Bernard Rickman, an editor at Gold Star who later became a director. In 1978, Guy dedicated Bats Out of Hell to him, "in appreciation of a lot of help and encouragement in the early years." While it's generally difficult to track down work that was almost always published anonymously or pseudonymously, we do have a number of things to go on when it comes to Gold Star. As Guy wrote for them mostly during the seventies, almost 500 sales to them are documented in his literary record book and some sections are dated (albeit without years). I own carbon copy typescripts of almost a third of these (plus a serious stack of readers' letters which will be impossible to identify without actual issues) and I also own a number of request sheets in which Gold Star ask for particular stories to be written. Work Model They had an interesting model. The editors would conjure up titles and basic ideas for four stories, per title per month, which they would then advertise in the end of the current issue, even though none of them had actually been written at the time. They would then send their stable of authors a photocopy of a typed page which listed those titles and ideas, along with a handwritten note asking which they'd like each author to write, when they needed it and what word count they were looking for. That means that the issue number listed on those request sheets is the one that advertised the stories rather than the one that featured them, as that would be the next issue. To use an example, one sheet that Gold Star sent to Guy is marked Sexpert Vol. 2 No. 2 and asks for him to write a couple of stories, Vice Patrol and Sinning Housewives. He duly wrote those pieces and they were published in Vol. 2 No. 3. This didn't always hold up, because changes sometimes happened; some of the stories were written and sent but never published. We know this as we have some correspondence from Gold Star at the very end of the seventies, a problematic time for them, in which they identify stories from their unused stack or return some as no longer required. Police Raids That problematic time usually involved police raids. Gold Star editor James McDonald wrote to Guy in November 1979 explaining that the company had been "subjected to a police raid of mammoth proportions, resulting in the loss of half a million magazines, film, stock etc. and - more important to you and me - also resulting in the temporary (I hope) suspension of most of our magazine output." Guy's writing for them had already tailed off but ended almost entirely at this point. Apparently, this wasn't a one-off, as Jacqueline Gold details in her book, Please Let It Stop. Gold Star Publishing was the publishing arm of a business founded by David, Ralph and Godfrey Gold, who were her father, uncle and grandfather respectively. She worked for them during the late seventies and early eighties before moving on to another part of the business, Ann Summers, for which in 1987 she would become the chief executive. She writes that, 'The late 1970s and early 1980s were interesting times at Gold Star because we were raided by police on average every eighteen months. Forget those dramatic sweeps you see on The Bill - these were distinctly less glamorous. In fact, they were rather pedestrian and boring, with our warehouse staff routinely helping the police load the magazines into the lorries. The expectation that these raids would happen meant that their cost to the business was actually factored into the budget. Money Guy was especially busy at this in 1975 and 1976. He'd often be asked to write two of the four titles for a particular monthly magazine and he'd be writing for more than one title at the same time. Gold Star threw him work: in February 1975, the first full month listed in his literary record book with dates, he sent them nine stories, three sets of case notes and seven 1,000 word batches of readers' letters, across at least four magazines. One way to highlight how much Gold Star were paying Guy is that, during that month, he earned £382.50 writing for them. However, four years later, Jacqueline Gold was paid only £45 a week (less than half as much as Guy) as a full time employee interning at her father's company! As I write, Jacqueline Gold CBE is estimated to be the 16th richest woman in Great Britain with a net worth of half a billion pounds. Writing Here's a table detailing what Guy wrote for Gold Star. The order is as per his literary record book, with other details added in from other sources. Where there's a value in the Magazine / Advert In columns, that means that a request sheet exists asking for that story to be written. Usually the resulting story would be published in the next issue of that magazine. However, at this time, I can only validate that titles with values in the Magazine / Story In column. This is where they were actually published, taken from the titles appearing on the covers of those issues. The Due column lists the copy date for when requested stories were due. The Sent column is what's listed in Guy's ledger and is presumably when he sent the stories in.
